Why do people self-harm?
For many people dealing with mental illness, self-harm can become a method of coping with the deep emotional pain that they are feeling as well as feelings of self-hatred, sadness, or guilt. Oftentimes, physical pain may be able to distract them from their emotional pain. Some may also find that it reminds them that they are still alive, and that they can feel. Still, others use it as a form of self-punishment. It is very important however, to understand that there are other ways to cope with these problems rather than hurting oneself. |
